Arsenal's Hattrick Hero: On this day, 29th August

The 29th August 1987 marked Alan Smith’s first of 115 goals in an Arsenal shirt scoring a hat-trick in a 6-0 win over Portsmouth at Highbury. Smith joined George Graham’s Arsenal from Leicester City in 1987 for a fee of £800,000 having spent five years with the Foxes scoring 84 goals in 217 appearances.

The rangy striker had struggled to find the back of the net in his first three appearances for the Gunners but when his first arrived it was followed by another two.

Arsenal's Gold Trophy - On this day: 22nd August

On 22nd August 2004 Arsenal equalled Nottingham Forest's record sequence of going 42 consecutive league matches unbeaten seeing off Middlesbrough 5-3 at Highbury.

Prior to the kick-off Arsenal were presented with a golden replica of the Premier League trophy as a reward for going the entire 2003/04 campaign unbeaten.

Arsenal On This Day: 23rd August

August 23rd 1986 was the opening day of the 1986/87 season with Arsenal starting their campaign at home to Manchester United.

It was to be a momentous occasion in the history of Arsenal Football Club as it marked George Graham's first match in charge of the Gunners. Typically Arsenal won the game 1-0, a score line that became famous for Arsenal under the Scot, with Charlie Nicholas scoring the only goal.
