End of season awards
Game of the Season
With no big 7-3 esque games this season I’ve had to go for the one from which I got the most enjoyment, Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool. It was just one week after they’d thrashed us 5-1 and a large part of me was bitterly regretting buying the tickets but how wrong I was. A stirring performance with Chamberlain making Gerrard look all of his 63 years and Sterling look like a towel boy, even their talismanic ‘Gerrard Pen’ couldn’t dampen what was an amazing game and the best atmosphere I personally have witnessed in the Emirates. It was also the first time I began to think ‘we could win this’, having only beaten two small teams up to that point in the competition.
Moment of the Season
For me, this is another one where the fact that I was there almost certainly helps, and I’m sure many of those at the Westfalenstadion in November would disagree, but I would have to go with Per’s late equaliser at Wembley. It looked for so long like it just wasn’t going to happen, especially after Gibbs who came on and made that fantastic impact saw his cross-come-shot come back off the post. The unbridled joy and relief optimised by Lukas Fabianski running the length of the pitch was absolutely nothing to be ashamed of despite what some TalkSport presenters might say. It was true passion and the magic of the FA Cup on full view for all, and if that is ‘embarrassing’ then they might as well abolish the competition. We hear for so long that the ‘magic of the cup’ is being lost then when a true moment like that comes along they try and sour it by criticising us for almost taking the cup too seriously. Hypocritical w*nkers.
