Are Arsenal Trying To Make Room For Cavani?

Lukas Podolski sealed a loan move to Inter Milan this week and will remain with I Nerazzurri until the end of the season and with Theo Walcott returning to fitness it seems like a great deal for all parties concerned. However, other moves are afoot that could leave Arsenal short on options upfront and in need of more bodies further fuelling rumours of Arsenal attempting to make a deal for Cavani.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has intimated that he may loan out Yaya Sanogo for the rest of the season and news broke this morning that Joel Campbell is the subject of some interest from a few Spanish clubs including David Moyes' Real Sociedad who saw Joel first-hand against his Manchester United side last season.

Attack was an area Arsenal seemed well-stocked in at the start of the season with, when fit, a roster that comprised Giroud, Walcott, Alexis, Welbeck, Podolski, Sanogo and Campbell all vying for three places, sometimes two when Cazorla, Özil and Chamberlain are thrown into the mix and that list does not include young Gnabry fighting back from injury or Chuba Akpom hoping to break into the first team.

Losing three players from that extensive list does not seem overly concerned but when you factor in the injury history of Arsenal it seems risky to lose a potent goalscorer, a physical presence and an enthusiastic young player with bags of potential unless you plan on replacing them of course.

The Cavani to Arsenal rumour just won't go away and respected journalists with obvious connections in football are confident enough in the interest, if at the very least that is all there is, to continue reporting the story.

Cavani is a player who can occupy any of our front three spots so has the versatility to cover the roles of Podolski and Campbell and then some. Certainly he is much more accomplished player than either of the aforementioned and comparison is relatively pointless but in terms of roles that can be performed the basic comparison is fair and we would not really be losing anything as we also have Welbeck who can perform in wide attacking roles.

As a through the middle striker Cavani has found game time limited at PSG, in the sense that a player of his ability would be first choice every game at most clubs, as that role is very much Ibrahimovic's.

Alexis has been a revelation at Arsenal this season however his best performances have come when he has played wide or behind the striker. His tenacity and energy have seen him play adequately as a centre-forward but his sheen is dimmed somewhat as a false nine compared to his dazzling displays elsewhere. Welbeck is a fine young striker with great physicaly strength and determination but he is a long way from becoming a deadly marksman.

Giroud shows flashes of brilliance with some of his goals and touches but is less dynamic than Welbeck and works best when people play off of him. This season when he has played he has looked comfortable and effective but without Ramsey and Walcott he is performing below his potential. Giroud's pace has seen a few chances go begging this season and our formation isn't quite getting the best out of him.

Arsenal would benefit from having another match winner in the team and a striker like Cavani, possessed of strength, pace, heading ability and excellent hold-up play, would certainly fit the bill.

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal's interest will be taken beyond mere intrigue into the realms of action but it certainly looks like they could be trying to make room in the squad and the payroll for another attacker and Cavani might just be that man.
