Arsenal Plot Bid For Dortmund Player

Over the years Arsenal are said to have tracked as many Dortmund players as Arsenal have had their own players tracked by Barcelona, City and Chelsea. Bids have been rumoured in the past few seasons for Gotze, Hummels, Gundogan, Sokratis, Lewandowski and Reus. Now Arsenal seem to be interested in one of Dortmund's most modest players, Kevin Großkreutz.

Subject to a rumoured €5m bid from the Gunners, lifelong BVB fan Großkreutz has been reported as previously saying he would like to join Arsenal should he ever leave Dortmund.

Naturally a winger, 26 year old Großkreutz racked up 24 apperances at right back for BVB last season displaying consummate professionalism and flexibility. Gunners boss Arsène Wenger is actively looking to bolster his squad and being able to play in mulitple positions seems to be a prerequisite for playing for Arsenal these days.

The versatile German can operate in both full-back positions as well as across the midfield. With injuries to Debuchy and Arteta, Monreal's status as back-up centre-back, Gibbs' battle for consistent fitness and both Podolski and Sanogo out on loan there is room for further shifting in the squad and a player like Großkreutz could serve Arsenal well in a variety of roles.

Dortmund have struggled in the Bundesliga this season but Großkreutz has recently claimed a lack of European football would not be enough to convince him to leave his boyhood club however with only 18 months left on his contract Dortmund may be willing to cash in and the if that is the case the lure of Arsenal should make the decision to part ways with BVB relatively easy.

A versatile squad player may seem like a strange addition for Arsenal who are actively trying to recruit a centre-back after securing the signature of future star Krystian Bielik but with Coquelin impressing as Arsenal's main holding midfielder his role as utility player for Arsenal is up for grabs.

Arsenal failed to convince BVB to sell Sokratis in the summer, mostly in part you would suspect was down to them being drawn together in the Champions League group stages, but now both clubs are comfortably in the knockout stages and unlikely to face one another again Dortmund may be willing to part with a cup-tied player.

This is looking like quite a busy January for Mr Wenger.

What do you think? Would Großkreutz be a good signing for Arsenal?
