Arsenal's highest finish in years but fans are still unhappy

For a while it seemed like an impossible feat. Tottenham Hotspur were an unstoppable juggernaut, challenging for the Premier League title, and we were just trying to secure our spot in the Champions League. The pressure got to them, though, and Arsene Wenger's lads managed to produce a blinder and leapfrog our rivals into second as they stalled. But still the cries to ditch the Frenchman continue. Shouldn’t we at least let him see out his contract after all he’s done for this great club?

Gunners fans are never happy, so it stands to reason that even after recording our highest league finish since 2005, there is still cause for complaint. Many feel that in this strange paradox of a season where Chelsea and Manchester City faltered so badly, Arsenal should have capitalised. To a certain extent we did, by finishing second, and nobody should try to diminish the excellent work that has gone on at Leicester City that led to them winning the title.

But on the other hand, finishing on 71 points is one our lowest totals in the last ten years, four points fewer than the previous season when we finished third, and a massive eight points fewer than 2014 when we ended in fourth spot on 79 points. However, only one of our points totals over the past ten years would have been enough to pip Leicester to the title this year, and that was the 83 we recorded all the way back in 2008. Stats like this suggest that the anti-Arsene brigade could be right, and he has been failing at the club ever since the last time we won the league.

Many other fans, though, have fond memories of the long period of sustained success that Wenger brought to the club between 1997 and 2005. They also believe that the fact that he has continued to ensure Champions League football throughout his tenure in such a competitive league is also commendable.

Wenger has one year left on his current contract, and it would only be fair to let someone who has done so much for us see it out. The last two occasions we won the league we finished in second the year before. Could this be an omen?

We say this every year, but this time Wenger really needs to make some waves in the transfer market if he wants to bow out on a high note. He also needs to buy them early so they get a chance to bed in - especially with the Euros coming up and pre-season tours after that. We can only hope and pray that the Frenchman will use this tour to showcase a few new world-class signings.  

We have the money to spend, and it is clear that we need a prolific forward that can put away 30 goals per season, along with back-up in other areas. Wenger should be given one more year, but if he doesn’t change his stubborn policy and fails to deliver that long-awaited league title, it should be his last.
