Has The Wenger Discussion Gone Too Far?

wenger in or out

The variety of opinions we have at Arsenal is something I really admire, but at the season beginning it really annoyed me to see discussions going on between fan factions in which the goal seemed to be to shout down others into agreeing with your opinion.

The main aim of a big discussion in my eyes is to show as many views you can and in the end everybody who participated decides themselves, if they change their mind on the topic or not. I do not like the word 'brigade' in this context because there is no war! It is time to accept views you cannot agree with and to end the discussion before emotions play a bigger role than arguments.

All people on earth learn through mistakes they make. Experience is a big factor in discussions in my opinion. It does not imply that you have to be old, just that you have learned a lot directly or indirectly. What I want to say is that supporters or fans who got to know more through many years following the club are allowed to say that they want to see a new manager or not. I do not think that anybody values Wenger´s credits less, just when you want him out.

I always join a good debate, I joined twitter for this reason. It helped me to get a bigger insight and overview about Arsenal FC, its fans and their views than by reading a newspaper or listening to reporters on TV. All those podcasts and blogs are very informative and help to get a better understanding of certain aspects.

At the beginning of the season I saw a big storm coming despite our recent cup win. 17 points out of possible 36 (12 games) is not what you expect as an Arsenal fan. 8th place in the league and worst start in 32 years cannot be a good sign. Many people thought that this will be Wenger´s last season. He is responsible, but as he says: “Judge me at the end of the season.”

Transfers are another story why people get annoyed by Wenger. He does not strengthen the squad at the right departments. Missing a topclass defensive midfielder since Vieira and selling the 3rd choice centre back Vermaelen without buying a replacement.

It looked as if Arsenal were doomed.

For me this argument has gone too far. Hitting people after a match, screaming over other people to give them no voice or still trying to persuade others from your own view when they clearly say: No!

After the Stoke match which Arsenal lost 3-2 on 7th December 2014 the aftermath was disgusting. Hearing from fans hitting each other because of Wenger in/out and watching the video, when Wenger is boarding the train back to London, makes you seriously wonder!

Football is emotional, but that is no judgement to hit others due to the fact of frustration. It happens because discussions get personal and when it gets personal it gets dirty. Keep that in mind.

This debate shows that many, many people care for Arsenal Football Club. Tolerance should be shared more often because we all follow the same main aim – success and happiness or as we say: Victoria Concordia Crescit.

Goonersphere's Response

Thanks for sending this in Albrecht. The petty arguing over Wenger In, Wenger Out has gone too far. We believe that Wenger has earned the right to be trusted with this squad and improved financial power moving forward but understand that for many 11 years without a league title is too much to forgive despite the circumstances. We are all entitled to our opinion and as long as it doesn't get personal then no topic should be out of bounds. Let's keep it respectful.

Tell us what you think! If you agree, or have a different view, please leave a comment in the comments section or why not write a response or your own article on YouWrite?
