Wenger Out? Be Careful What You Wish For

Do you want Wenger Out? It's a rhetorical question because, in the nicest way possible, it doesn't really matter. Wenger will need to be replaced eventually and at his age that is 99.9% certain to be in this decade. Another 6 years of Wenger is enough to make some people rejoice and others pull their hair out. Who is right? It doesn't matter.

What does matter is the future of Arsenal football club and the recent goings on at Manchester United should serve as a warning for Arsenal FC. We followed the tenure of Moyes and the campaign to get him out quite closely on Fanzo, which has an excellent Arsenal channel with the latest news (you can download it here ), as it seemed pertinent to Arsenal and the ongoing situation with Wenger.

Ironically the supporters of each club have been as successful in getting rid of managers they don't want as their teams have been on the field and maybe some of the anti-Wenger crowd will be taking notes from the Moyes Out lot but we have completely different clubs and that is what made the replacement of Sir Alex Ferguson so relevant to Arsenal because replacing Wenger will affect us in the same but also entirely different ways.

Being the follow up act to the most successful manager, and recently successful we should add, in English football history is a hard task and in hindsight Manchester United will regret putting someone so "inexperienced" at the helm. This is something Arsenal also need to be wary of. A manager like Ferguson can drag and inspire a weakening team to a title whereas Moyes can do nought but watch the rot set in and pray for Europa League. A manager like Wenger can inspire and push a good but lacking team towards a top four finish. What could an inexperienced manager do with them? Would they too be praying for Europa League football or would it be much worse?

After just 10 months of employing Moyes, the management at Old Trafford exploded the myth they afford their managers time and support. It is understandable that they sacked Moyes because he was a convenient scapegoat for the issues left behind by the perfectly-timed retired Ferguson. If they want to progress next season they need to attract players and inspire the ones they already have. Sacking Moyes was a good way of telling the current team it's no their fault and maybe getting a few better performances and telling future prospects they aren't going to be joining a team on the way down, just in a lull, a lull they could pull them out of if they signed.

Arsenal wouldn't have such a luxury if they were in the same situation as there is no recent success to point to (unless they win the FA Cup in May of course). People spoke of Moyes as a replacement for Wenger a year ago and now a top club wouldn't touch him with yours. It's very easy to point out the failings of Wenger but it is harder to point out managers without those failings but also with all of his strengths.

Manchester United are looking for another manager and considering the club they are, and let's face it - we're not currently in their league despite what the table says this year, it is fascinating a senior source said this about getting another new manager.

There is not a vast pool to choose from

Guardiola and Klopp aren't options for United. Mourinho is unlikely to join and certianly would never be an option for us. There is no chance of tempting Rodgers or Pellegrini so United have to look towards unproven but exciting managers like Simeone and De Boer, experienced guys like Ancelotti and Van Gaal or the inbetweeners like Blanc.

Many of our Dutch supporters would not like to see Louis van Gaal at Arsenal and at 62 years old should he really be considered a contender for a post at United or Arsenal if we are planning for the future?

As with top level players there is a limited talent pool and whilst many berate Wenger it is almost guaranteed he would walk into a job at Barcelona, Madrid or PSG next season. You could say he hasn't been successful enough recently but these are clubs with lots of money and lots of top players already. They want to play entertaining football and Wenger is a master at it. They'd sign him up, pay him handsomely, enjoy his football and then sack him if he didn't win enough. Smart money says he would be quite successful with the players available at those clubs.

Wenger might not be doing the job we would all hope or winning as many trophies as we would have liked but replacing him even with the lack of trophies since 2005 is no easy feat. United supporters never asked for Moyes to drag them into a battle for a Europa League spot and will be pleased he is gone but he was only there because the previous manager needed replacing. Be careful what you wish for.
