Wilshere not getting carried away

Jack Wilshere has insisted Arsenal will continue to take this Premier League season game-by-game despite the Gunners climbing back to the top of the table following their 2-1 victory at Aston Vila last night. Victories for Chelsea and Manchester City at the weekend had seen Arsenal drop to third in the table ahead of their trip to Villa Park, and Arsene Wenger’s men wasted little time in reclaiming their place at the top of the table.

The Gunners midfielder opened the scoring for his side on 34 minutes against Villa, collecting a Nacho Monreal cross and finishing nicely to notch up his fifth goal of the season in all competitions. Wilshere was then on hand to play Olivier Giroud through a minute later, with the French striker making no mistake to slam home his 12th goal of the campaign.

While Manchester City and Chelsea currently find themselves ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League title betting, Wenger’s men are looking more and more like genuine title contenders with each impressive victory. Wilshere, who collected the man of the match award after the Villa win, insisted that while it had been important to regain the top spot in the league, the Gunners wouldn’t be looking any further than their next game.

"It's a massive three points, especially in the second half when Villa came at us, but we’ve got to just take each game as it comes." Wilshere said.

"We've done that a lot this season, maybe dropped off in the second half and let teams come on to us, but we dealt with it well. We're showing that side of our game and we hope to continue that for the rest of the season.”

Wilshere’s impressive form is as encouraging to England fans as it is to Arsenal supporters. England are 25/1 with Paddy Power to win the World Cup, and performances from key players like the Arsenal midfielder are going to be key if they want to prove they can finally compete with the big boys. But first, Wilshere will surely be focused on helping the Gunners end their trophy drought in sensational fashion.
